In January all the counseling classroom lessons dealt with respecting diversity. In the lower grades the Second Step lesson focuses how people can have different feelings about the same situation. Beginning in grade 2 we talk about some of the many types of individual differences. The lessons introduce how culture shapes beliefs and the many aspects of culture. During No Name-Calling Week we emphasize you don’t call people mean names and point out differences. The students were also taught appropriate ways to handle name-calling and how to talk about differences. All fourth graders did a family heritage and family background interview and then decorated a hand cut out highlighting what makes them unique for display on the “Differences” bulletin board.
